This will be the last blog I post about my book on 9/11, 102 Minutes. I really enjoyed reading it and I think that you should read this book. 102 Minutes ends with the towers collapsing and the shock and horror on peoples faces as they collapsed. In the book it says " Then it came: a rumble, the crashes, the blotting out of light, as if a cosmic drain had suddenly been opened, sucking away the ordinary, familiar shapes of everyday life." Page 752, Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn. The book first highlighted how people felt after the south tower collapsed and then went to their reactions after the North tower collapsed. It also puts us in the shoes of a man named Will Jimeno, he survived the collapse but he was berried in the rubble, he was very lucky to make it out alive. I believe that this book is very important to the people like me, who were born after 9/11 and did not experience the tragic attacks or see it on television. This book helped me realize how bad 9/11 was and how the people inside the towers felt while all this was happening. This also describes very clearly the people in the books feelings as this attack was happening and helps me understand the horror they experienced both while escaping the towers and watching as the towers fell. The most valuable idea from my book is that even though the people who escaped could have just run away and not help anybody, many people risked their lives to help the lives of others and put others before themselves. I believe that if somebody wants to study the 9/11 attacks in depth and really get a feel for what happened, this is the book for them.

As I stated in the last blog post, my book is 102 Minutes and is about 9/11 and the story of someone who survived through the attacks. Many things took place after 9/11 to improve safety in airports and improving fireproofing in buildings. The book talks a lot about the 1993 World Trade Center and some of the main characters were there during the 1993 bombing and helped people to evacuate the buildings. after those bombings they made changes to who they could let in public buildings and put more secure cameras and security in to most public buildings across America. The book talks about Dianne DeFontes and about the problems that many other people in the World Trade Center experienced trying to evacuate the buildings during the attacks. I feel this attacks were similar to the Sandy Hook Shootings a few years ago. Both attacks were surprise attacks and both shocked many people.102 Minutes is based on a real life story from one survivor of 9/11. The survivor Dianne DeFontes is in one of the World Trade Center buildings when it got hit with the airplane. In the book Alan Reiss thought what many people in the World Trade Center buildings at he time of the attack thought that someone had either bombed the buildings or a gun had gone off. In the book he says " A person with a gun had set off the chaos, he guessed". Also in the book Caleb Arron Dack, a computer consultant said to his wife "We're at Windows on the World" "There was a bomb". Most people in the world trade center at the time thought that a person had bombed the towers, similar to the bombing in one of the World Trade Center's parking lots in 1993. In the World Trade Center in the book, the buildings had many people coming to the buildings and especially on that date the building was packed because a business meeting was taking place between top executives from Merrill Lynch and UBS Warburg. Also just like in real life, the owner of the Port Authority (The company who owned the World Trade Center at the time) was planning to go and eat breakfast at the World Trade Center, but his wife made him go to a doctors appointment which saved his life. The people in the towers were very scared and distraught just like in real life and the main character felt the same way. The book also has talked about the fact that the building had stairs for just Port Authority employees and separate stairwells for all other businesses in the World Trade Center towers. This is true in the real towers as well. The North Carolina food bank says “One in four children in North Carolina are food insecure.” You are used to having breakfast lunch and dinner everyday, well some people don’t have that chance. Some are given a free and reduced lunch in wake county. In one month in 2017 there were 50,886 kids (wcpss 2017) that used the reduced lunch opportunity. In North Carolina there are almost 630,000 homes without enough to eat (Inter Faith Food Shuttle). We are interested in hunger around North Carolina because too many people die just because they don’t get fed the necessary meals. What do kids do over the summer when they have no school and can’t get a free lunch from school? There are so many organizations open to help the hungry. This doesn't mean people can access them, some have transportation problems, or they don’t know about the organizations. We need to make food more available to people who need it. Society needs to try harder to help the ones in need. We should do more to prevent hunger in this world. It is too hard to buy healthy produce due to the high prices but the worst foods in the markets are also the cheapest ones and for some families, is the only foods that they can afford. Citizens need to see that the world isn't as perfect as it is deemed as, there are extreme problems in this world that can be made better. This is why we are interested in helping the cause. The Issue Hunger in North Carolina has increased drastically, one in four children in North Carolina are food insecure. North Carolina has one of the highest percentages in the United States of children who are food insecure on the daily basis . (hunger in America study 2014)”. “Almost 630,000 north carolina households don’t have enough food to eat” (Inter faith food shuttle) .“North Carolina has the 8th highest rate of food insecurity in the nation (Inter faith food shuttle)”In North Carolina, food insecurity is rapidly on the rise. “Hunger in North carolina has increased from 12.6% to 19.6%” ( in a growing state, growing hunger 2013). “One in four are food insecure in North Carolina” (nc food banks 2018). “The cause of hunger is sometimes National disasters like floods & earthquakes (food world programme 2018)” But other times it’s just because of the lack of jobs. Poverty is also another cause of hunger. Hunger affects the brain function, how can we expect a student to do well in school when they don’t have enough food to it. You can’t do well and get good grades in school when you don’t have any food to eat. Schools give free lunch and breakfast but what about in the summer break, winter break or on the weekends? If we don’t take care of this issue now, more and more kids will be scared and worried about what they are going to eat tonight. This issue is not gonna get fixed by itself we have to do something and do it quick! The Solution Agencies in North Carolina such as Rise Against Hunger and Inter-Faith Food Shuttle help give families who can't get food every day get food by donations. The Inter-Faith Food Shuttle also does a program called BackPack Buddies. BackPack Buddies is designed to provide children from low-income households with 10-12 pounds of nutritious kid friendly groceries for the weekend when free school lunches and breakfasts are not provided. The Food Shuttle works with each school system and individual schools to identify need. School officials at each site then identify students to receive BackPack Buddies. (Inter-Faith Food Shuttle). Many food agencies also have a School Pantry program that the school staff run. School Pantries help students get food before they leave school so that they can feed themselves and their families. (Inter-Faith Food Shuttle). Even Though these agencies and these programs exist this is still not enough to help people and families get food every night. We can still do alot to help these people and families get a meal each night. 19.6 percent of children in Wake county lives in food insecure homes (Food Insecurity Statistics). So what can we do to help these families get the meals they need? We can donate to these agencies. BackPack Buddies is looking for donations so that they can continue to help children across Wake county get the meals they need to survive. All these agencies need money to keep helping our community get meals. Agencies also need volunteers to deliver food to these peoples doors. You can also host a food drive or donate food to these agencies. If more people start contributing and helping, this issue will get much better and help better our community and a society as a whole. Conclusion In conclusion hunger, poverty and homelessness is big problem in wake county. By hearing about these stories and finding out information about poverty and homelessness in wake county, we think it would be best to volunteer in a food bank. First we will contact food banks and ask if we can volunteer, then we will ask teachers and staff if they can help us make it happen. If there are teachers and staff available to help us we can ask parents, students and other staff to donate. If we help the food bank we will be able to learn more about homelessness and poverty in wake county and around the world. What is most important is that we will be able to help people and make a huge difference in our community and in their lives. Another thing that we can do is listen to people's stories and learn from their experiences. If we help the food bank it might inspire other students to donate also. We want people to donate to make someone's day. Since people are dying from hunger there is a way we can help people. Hopefully one day there will be a way to prevent homelessness, poverty and hunger. Works cited <http://forsythbackpackprogram.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/charts1.png> “BTC.” NCDA. 2011-2013. These students only option most of the time, is the lunch and breakfast they receive at school five days a week. They barely eat food on the weekends and they heavily rely on schools to feed them. One out of every 4 students in wake county starves on the daily. This is a big issue right now not just in wake county but all across America. I am personally interested in this issue because I have friends and classmates who are struggling through this right now as we speak. Also I feel as if we can do so much to improve this issue and this would make a big difference in these students grades and lives in general. I think everybody should care about this issue because you would not like to go through this s an adult but as a student who is trying to make it to college and make a better life for themselves. Being hungry has shown scientifically to make students perform worse on tests or quizzes than students who aren't starving and praying for dinner every single night. This is such a big issue and for people to not do anything about this is bad for those people and bad for the community as a whole. We can do many things to help better or even solve this issue. BackPack buddies https://www.foodshuttle.org/backpackbuddies/ is an organization that helps kids get food by putting food in their backpack when they are ready to come home from school. Now Wake County themselves are trying to take action by putting food pantries for students who are starving http://www.wral.com/wake-county-high-schools-add-food-pantries-to-fight-hunger-in-hallways/17104281/. We can fix this. We can help give food to families and students who are struggling to get food, we can have a supermarket that has food for very cheap so families who don't have enough money to shop at regular supermarkets can shop there. This I believe that you should just do you and you should not listen to what bad things people say about you. My drawing skills are very bad and I might not be very talented at drawing. Some people laugh at me for how I can’t draw well. Most people say I can’t draw or that I should stop drawing altogether, but I still find enjoyment in drawing. One time I was doing a project and I drew something for that project and one of the classmates I was working with said that my drawing was bad and said that he would do it. He said my drawing looked awful and looked more like a couple of sticks than an actual river. This hurt me alot and just I felt disappointed that I could not draw for this big project. For me this has happened a good amount when working on projects.I usually try to avoid drawing if i’m doing a project or doing something big for school. After tests I would just doodle on a piece of paper in my binder or on the test itself. Today I still draw for fun and still today i’m not the best at drawing. To me that is ok and it doesn't matter what I draw as long as it makes me focus on the drawing itself and not about other things. When people look at my drawings they don’t think I did anything special and to them it looks like a mess, but to me that drawing is something that I put a lot of effort into and they look great. I think that my situation with the drawing can apply to many other situations like the way you dress or other instances. Maybe I can’t draw a dog or a cat very well but I don’t believe that my drawing is a way for people to make fun of me, I put a lot of effort into what I draw and it means alot to me. This is why I believe this is why you should just do you and not listen to what other people say about you.
